iPhone/GSM Speaker Buzz Solutions

June 26th, 2008

Some speakers are better than others at dealing with the interference caused by GSM mobiles.  This article documents one bloke’s extended quest to solve the problem.

Executive summary is:

  • The interference affects the amplifier, not the speakers or the cable (most computer speakers have the amp built-in to one of the speakers) so the solution is a well shielded amplifier.
  • Cheap solution is DLO Portable Speakers for iPhone (Apparently these are now distributed by Philips)
  • More expensive solution is Sonic Impact T-Amp with high sensitivity (90dB) bookshelf speakers

Or, another idea would be to fix the phone and not the speakers, which would be less expensive. Check out http://www.quickbridgesolutions.com

They have a shield that fits into your iPhone case. I have one and it works great. Because I work for a radio station, so there are speakers everywhere. It would be insane to change all of that, or to put shielding on every speaker. But this shield takes care of it all, by shielding the phone.
